It’s been a little while since I last wrote about one of my favorite Total Life Changes Core Values, “Having fun, we get more work done.” That doesn’t mean we haven’t been having fun around TLC, of course, it just means there’s always plenty to talk about!

My good friend and partner-in-crime, TLC COO John Licari, recently blogged about this Core Value, too, and how having fun doesn’t just stop at work. It’s important to have fun in real life, too!

He writes, “Life is precious, and life is short. Let’s all try to live, laugh, and love in the short time that we have here on earth.”

He is so right. I’ve written before about how to make work fun, but today, I thought I’d share some ideas about how to make life fun. If you’re inspired, I’d love to hear how you put these suggestions to work in your life. And if you have any suggestions of your own, please share them at our TLCHQ Twitter page.

Number One: Stop worrying about what others think so much

This first suggestion isn’t so much about doing something specific, but rather, give yourself the space to have fun, even if others poo-poo your ideas.

Sometimes, worrying about the judgment of others can help us keep out of trouble, but it can also be a roadblock to our happiness. Don’t let worry get in the way of enjoying life. Everything else flows from there.

Number Two: Visit a new place

I love traveling, and I’m glad to be getting back to it now that the COVID pandemic is (hopefully) coming to an end. I love traveling so much, we regularly hold TLC events all over the place.

Going somewhere new can be scary, but the fun is kind of scary. That uncertainty is an excitement that can power you through some heavy days. Look for a way to visit someplace new this week.

That doesn’t mean you need to pack a suitcase! Someplace new can be right around a corner. The park you’ve never entered. The new library that just opened. A gym you haven’t tried. A different church service. Live music you’ve never heard.

Most of these places can be found in our hometowns, and without spending a lot of money.

Number three: Meet a new person

You can probably meet someone new while you’re visiting that new place, but only if you’re looking for that opportunity.

New people bring new ideas, and new ideas are fun!

Start with a smile. Say hello when you pass. You never know what kind of connection you might make.

Number four: Schedule fun

We’re all busy. It’s so easy to let our days plan themselves instead of doing the planning ourselves.

As strange as it may sound, block off some time deliberately to do something fun. If it’s important to you—and having some fun should be important to you—then it’s important enough to actually write into your daily planner.

If you’re curious about some more justification for having fun, and ways to avoid the excuses and mindset that get in the way of fun, I suggest you check out this helpful piece from Psychology Today.

Until next time, work hard, and play harder.

You’ll thank me for it.
