I founded Total Life Changes because I decided I wanted something more out of life than my assembly line job. Don’t get me wrong: that job provided for my family, and I was grateful to have it. I just couldn’t shake the feeling that I was supposed to be doing something else. Something more. I was hungry.

That hunger inspired me to start TLC so I could help people, and it sustains every move we make. Famous motivator Tony Robbins believes that staying hungry inspires people to lead extraordinary lives. The challenge is finding the recipe for staying hungry.

I think I have some suggestions.

1. Constantly Reevaluate

What is it that you really want? Chances are, the answer to that question has changed over the years. Chasing a dream you no longer have drains your passion and your resources. Be willing to honestly evaluate what you want and pursue it, and change direction when the dream changes.

2. Move

Exercise stimulates the mind and the body. Start your day with exercise to help fuel the passion you need to attack your schedule.

Working out in the morning has a lot of health benefits, including inspiring healthier food choices throughout the day and improving your focus.

3. Listen and Learn

A common bit of advice for staying hungry for success is to surround yourself with people who have what you want. There’s a chance that could cause jealousy and resentment. I suggest, instead, taking the approach to listen and learn from everyone around you, so we aren’t preoccupied with acquiring the things we don’t have.

It’s a different mindset. Don’t make it all about the chase. Even a runner needs to grab a drink from the water table along the marathon’s route. Keep moving forward, but fuel yourself with new ideas.

4. Maintain humility

Hunger comes from the understanding that you’re not done yet. You still have room to improve. Being grateful and humble inspires our effort to progress.

When I left the assembly line, I knew I had to, but I was thankful for the experience and opportunity that job provided to me. I met good people there, and we did good work.

Keeping humble helps you stay hungry for success by keeping your efforts honest.

5. Time is Everything

Most people understand that “timing is everything,” but I’m asking you to remember that time is everything. Time is our one resource we can never renew.

How we spend our time reveals what we value. Where are you spending that resource, and are your transactions feeding your plans? Is your time being used as a good meal, or is it junk food?

I think the best example of valuing time is found in the song “Time is Love,” by country singer Josh Turner. Give it a listen, and you’ll be left thinking about how you’re spending your day.

One of our Core Values at TLC is “We are always hungry for more.” We stay hungry because we believe in what we do and want to do more of it! I hope you can find your purpose, and stay hungry for it, too. That’s where happiness lives.
