As the weather here in TLC’s home state makes the move from Spring to Summer, I and many of my fellow Michiganders find themselves outside planting gardens, checking on siding, and doing those odd chores around the house that everyone does once the temperatures get warmer. The other day I was shoving some weeds and leaves into a compost bag I’d gotten from a popular big box home improvement store, and I was struck by the print I found on the bag.

“Never Stop Improving,” it said.

I hadn’t expected to find such wisdom on the bag I was tossing old dandelions into.

Continuous Development

Total Life Changes is built around the concept of continuous personal improvement and some of our success is tied into our desire to always improve the business. It’s easy to let previous accomplishments have the final say in what we do, but that never builds lasting results. If you’re not moving forward, you’re moving backwards.

I wanted to share with you some wisdom from the Western Australia Small Business Development Corporation. In addition to turning around the fortunes of everyone’s favorite carnivorous marsupials, the Australians have been busy giving some pretty good advice on how to continue improving your small business.

All told, they offer eight ways to help grow and improve your small business. I’d like to highlight a few of their suggestions here.

How to Grow and Improve Your Business

Offer Great Customer Service

Everyone knows how important it is to look out for your customers’ needs, but what tangible things are we doing as business owners to make sure we’re serving our customers in the best possible way?

At TLC, we offer great customer service by training our Life Changers in how to most-effectively provide the products our customers love. We’ve developed processes that make it easy to place orders, fill orders, and check on customer satisfaction.

We’re available to our customers and small business partners around the world. When they call, we listen. We take action. We initiate change. And we give more of what our customers like.

Anyone with a small business could follow that path, and should.

Host Events

Everyone knows about TLC’s events. (You do, don’t you?) Our events are the perfect place to share ideas, learn new strategies, and get excited about everything that makes TLC special.

You don’t need to have a big stage, loud music, and a spectacular light show to host a great event. A few bowls of pretzels and a meaningful message is all it takes to have a memorable evening, and grow your small business.

Give Back to Your Community

There are all sorts of studies about how charitable giving can be good for business. In the end, though, it’s about making a lasting difference in people’s lives. If that can help grow a business, fine, but the focus here is on improving the world. Business will fall in line.

Improvement is the Goal

One philosophy you could employ is to make improvement the goal. Be as specific or as general as you want, but always make growth the point of every decision you make. That’s as sure a way to guarantee success as you can get in business. If you’re always improving, chances are, you’ll be all right.
